President's Report

Have you made plans to join us at our Happy Hour?  We hope to see you there.  As we all prepare for graduations and vacations, your HoCo HRS Board of Directors is working on it's strategic plan to provide a more fulfilling membership experience for you, our members.  If have not already, please take the time to respond to the survey that was sent a few weeks ago.  We will use this information in our mid-year strategic review.

We are pleased to announce that the Howard County Human Resources Society was awarded the 2016 Platinum Excel Award.  This award recognizes outstanding achievements in chapter operations and a commitment to providing meaningful programs and services to members. It also is recognition of our continued growth and development as a business leader, capable of developing strategies that lead to business success.  

We attribute our success to our members.  Thank you for your continued support of our chapter.

Calendar of Events

One of the best aspects of the HoCo HRS is the participation and access to high level HR professionals. We have a very active Board of Directors and a very engaged group of members. We encourage sharing ideas and opportunities. The best place and time to really develop relationships is at our Networking Events. We usually get 50+ attendees. Food is provided and Sponsors offer great door prizes. Drinks are not included, but a full cash bar is available. We look forward to seeing you there. You can register if you like but that is not required.

Legislative Update

Governor Hogan vetoes Paid Sick Leave

Gov. Larry Hogan on Thursday vetoed House Bill 1 that would have required employers with as few as 15 employees to provide paid sick leave for those that work an average of 12 hours per week.  

The Governor blamed the Democrat-dominated General Assembly for rejecting what he called his "common-sense" bill that would have created incentives for employers to offer sick leave. Instead, they passed a measure he said would force small businesses to lay off employees or shut their doors.

The Governor is expected to sign an executive order today, establishing a field study led by Maryland Secretary of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Kelly Schulz to investigate a paid leave option that would not harm businesses. 

There is a potential override vote that could take place later this year or when lawmakers return to Annapolis early next year.

SHRM Certification Update

Do you ever ask yourself ‘why do I need to be certified in HR’?  One of the best reasons is to add value to your current employer.  SHRM advocates for HR professionals to use the information below to speak to your employer on how to help you get certified (from allowing you study time to possibly using company funds to help pay for the cost).

Now, more than ever, HR teams are required to assume a greater leadership role, contributing to and advancing their organizations’ strategic direction. The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credentials recognize this trend and take a fresh and current look at what HR professionals need to know—and how to put that knowledge to work. The certification program covers behavioral competencies and functional knowledge areas within the themes of HR Competencies, People, Organization, Workplace and Strategy. Attaining and
maintaining my credential means I’ll be ready to take on new roles and responsibilities.
I WILL LEARN PRACTICAL SKILLS THAT WILL IMPACT MY JOB IMMEDIATELY
SHRM certification is the new standard for HR professionals around the globe, as it is among the first to focus on practical, real-life HR information, teaching, and testing competencies and knowledge. When I prepare for the certification exam with the SHRM Learning System, I won’t be simply memorizing a textbook; I’ll be applying concepts, using behavioral judgment and understanding best practices for handling day-to-day business as
well as unexpected scenarios. I’ll be learning from the experiences of other HR professionals, sharpening my skills, and boosting my productivity and effectiveness.
THESE CERTIFICATIONS WERE DEVELOPED WITH EMPLOYERS IN MIND
SHRM conducted global research, including outreach to major corporations, universities and over 35,000 members of the profession worldwide. Based on its findings, SHRM determined that, in addition to technical knowledge, a successful HR career will also be determined by behavioral competencies—the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP include both of these essential elements. This credential will reflect what I need to know and how to apply it to be a leader in our organization. Growing the influence of HR leaders through certification is a worthwhile investment that also improves our reputation as an organization that takes HR seriously.
MY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS WILL BE GLOBALLY APPLICABLE AND UNIVERSALLY RECOGNIZED
We live and work in a global economy, and my skills need to be globally applicable and accepted. Based on one single SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge, the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credentials are relevant and applicable worldwide. Earning this credential will give me the recognition and flexibility to use my knowledge, skills and competencies anywhere our organization operates, now and in the future.

SHRM has represented the HR community for more than 68 years, and has more than 275,000 members in 160 countries. It is a well-respected organization at the forefront of HR trends and emerging professional knowledge. The SHRM BoCK, the foundation of my credential and recertification, is supported by SHRM, is kept current and relevant, and encourages lifelong learning. Training of this caliber and reliability cannot be replicated, and it provides an opportunity for our entire HR team from which our whole organization can
benefit—ultimately saving our organization time and money on training and professional development.

Join us for our next #becHaRitable event: HoCoHRS' Back to School Supply Drive!

Your opportunity to participate in the HoCo HRS #becHaRitable is coming soon.  We will be collecting new, unopened school supplies and pakcing backpacks for back to school! School supply donations will collected at our next three chapter events held on:  June 13, July 20 and August 2.

We also welcome voluteers to help us pack the backpacks.  We will meet on August 2nd from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the Howard County Library Administration building to pack the bags.  For more information on needed donations or to volunteer, please email info@hoco-hrs.org.

  • SHRM Looking for MD Business – Issue of Opioid Use

Sundra Hominik from SHRM reached out to us to see if there were any…”businesses or organizations in Maryland that have taken a lead in dealing with the issue of Opioid use or who has tried an innovative approach to the problem.   The Daily Record is seeking leads for someone they could partner with on a possible event on this topic.”  Could you disseminate out to your membership?   If a business is interested they can contact Sundra directly at sundra.hominik@shrm.org or reach her at (703) 535-6273.

  • Results from MAC Spring Survey & New Orleans “Stepping It Up” Competition

The Northeast region had the second most amount of responses received and the respondent numbers to the survey doubled this year. Thank you for ensuring the voices in the Northeast Region are heard in regards to their SHRM experience.   The SHRM Membership Advisory Council met with SHRM’s leadership team at SHRM headquarters in Alexandria, VA, this past Tuesday and Wednesday. We also reviewed the survey results and will be presenting recommendations based on the feedback to the SHRM Board a few days prior to the SHRM Annual Conference in New Orleans. More to come on the survey results once the information is finalized.

Finally, Step It Up with the “Stepping It Up” Team in New Orleans.  Please join me in a fundraising effort for the SHRM Foundation and a New Orleans organization that supports veterans. Each MAC rep. is serving as a team captain, and I understand that the competition is steep.  Let’s walk miles and enjoy the city of New Orleans, track our steps, and raise money for these worthy causes. The cost to you is a minimum of $20 to join and healthy steps to take.  I hope to see you at the 2017 SHRM Annual Conference.

  • BEST EMPLOYERS IN MARYLAND 

MD SHRM is thrilled to be partnering with The Daily Record and Best Companies Group to produce the first annual Best Employers in Maryland program. This is the only statewide initiative dedicated to identifying and recognizing Maryland’s best employers. We are working to shine the light on the hard work our HR community is doing to create environments where employee love to come to work. Positive workplaces are vital for Maryland to compete in both national and global arenas.

This statewide competition is open to all Maryland for-profit and not-for-profit organizations with at least 15 employees working in MD. Being headquartered in Maryland is not a requirement.  Registration deadline is June 16, 2017.
